The data set is in Microsoft Excel 97 format; the variables are described more fully in the article itself. Missing variables are denoted by an empty cell. This README file also includes a log file which reproduces the results reported in Table 1. Variables: STATE: Three letter label for the state name. YEAR: Four digit year. MILREG: Dummy variable, 1 if the state is a military regime, 0 otherwise. POLDUMMY: Dummy variable, 1 if the state is a democracy, 0 otherwise. POLITY: Polity score, ranging from -10 to 10, higher numbers indicating a more democratic state. MULTMID: Dummy variable, 1 if the state has engaged in a Militarized Interstate Dispute with at least two states, 0 otherwise. MIDPART: A count of the number of MIDs the state has participated in. VICEXP: Vicarious experience. DIREXP: Direct experience. DEMOC: The state's 0-10 democracy score. AUTOC: The state's 0-10 autocracy score. ENERGY: Energy consumption. MANDUMMY: Dummy variable, 1 if the state has a maneuver strategy, 0 otherwise. PUNDUMMY: Dummy variable, 1 if the state has a punishment strategy, 0 otherwise. DEMCRTZN: Democratization. CCODE: The state's three digit Correlates of War country code. MXDREG: Dummy variable, 1 if the state is a mixed regime, 0 otherwise. BORDERS: Count of the number of bordering states. TERRAIN: Terrain. STEEL: Steel production. TRPQUAL: Troop quality.
