Biography

Luis Martinez is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science.  Luis’s main research areas of interest are political economy, economic development, and public finance, with a regional focus on Latin America. Luis’s research has been published in leading academic journals in economics and political science, including the Journal of Political Economy, American Journal of Political Science, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of the European Economic Association, and American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. and has been featured in popular media outlets including The EconomistThe Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal,  and Foreign Affairs. Luis has a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics and a BA in economics and philosophy from Universidad de los Andes in his native Colombia. Before coming to Emory, he was an assistant professor at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. In 2022, Luis was awarded the Juan Luis Londoño Medal, a biennial prize awarded to Colombian economists under the age of forty for their contributions to research and public policy.
