Research Assistants, Field Interviewers, & Project Manager

The Department of Political Science is recruiting for the positions of Research Assistant, Field Interviewers, and Project Manager to conduct qualitative data collection for an Atlanta-based study of the pathways to economic mobility for low-income adults. Research assistants and field interviewers will have the opportunity to conduct interviews, receive training from an expert in the field, gain experience on a large-scale research study, and work closely with the research team.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

· Recruit interview respondents through phone, email, or door knocking

· Follow proper Institutional Review Board procedures for obtaining consent from participants in the research study

· Conduct in-depth interviews with adult participants in federally-funded workforce development (job training) programs

· Write field notes summarizing the main points of each interview

· Use qualitative analysis software to code transcribed interviews

· Manage the paperwork and documentation necessary for securely storing and organizing respondent data

· Interviews are conducted at the convenience of respondents; in consequence, work hours need to be highly flexible and evening and weekend work will occasionally be required

Minimum Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in related discipline (Field Interviewers, Project Manager)

· Some related experience or coursework related to urban poverty and economic mobility (Research Assistants)

Preferred Qualifications

· Have or pursuing graduate-level education in, political science, sociology, public policy, anthropology, public health or related field

· Previous experience with interviewing or qualitative data collection and analysis

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Demonstrated interest in qualitative research and/or research related to job training and economic mobility

· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage interview participants

· Organization and time management

· Ability to work independently, and as a member of a team

· Ability to work well under pressure and within timelines that are relatively constrained

· Ability to problem solve and think creatively

Level of Independent Decision Making

· May conduct interviews independently, sometimes with the assistance of an additional interviewer

· Participates in team meetings, but most of the activities associated with the position (recruitment, paperwork following the interview, fieldnotes, data coding and entry) will be performed independently

Additional Details

Federally-funded workforce training programs are intended to improve transitions to work, career development and financial stability resulting in improved economic mobility for low-income adults. However, training completion rates fall below expected levels and vary by regions, prompting important questions about why eligible individuals that can benefit occupationally and financially from workforce training programs are unable to complete their training. To understand what drives training completion efforts throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area, this study adds in-depth narrative interviews and ethnographic observations to uncover the mechanisms underlying training completion rates.

Time Period

Part-time (approximately 20-30 hours per week) and full-time positions are available running from May through August 2024. Some positions may be available for a longer duration.

Compensation

$13-$30 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
